The medical students
of the 1940s started their careers at the Anatomy Block at Francis Road,
Maradana. Their first lectures in Anatomy were held in a state of the
art lecture theatre with a marble dissecting table, on which the human
body was placed for dissection by a 'Demonstrator'. The dissecting table
was placed in the well surrounded by ascending rows of wooden desks
and benches arranged in a semi circle. All the students carried strong,
rigid, sharp scalpels meant to be used in the dissections of the human
body. The students carved their names on the desks while listening to a
boring anatomy demonstrations. You can see the results surviving nearly
80 years later. Try and guess their names carved on the benches from
the photos.
