Punya Heendeniya, Milroy De Silva.

Punya Heendeniya - Wife of Milroy De Silva

It was after our internship year in the post 1966 years. I was DMO at Koslanda, Milroy had been appointed DMO Moneragala and had moved in with his newly married wife Punya to the DMO quarters in Moneragala. Somadasa Kongahawita had been appointed DMO Maha Oya. Soma had bought some fresh crabs and  gone with the culinary delicacy, to pay a visit to Milroy and his wife. The crabs were alive and Soma had thought, that the crabs when cooked would tickle the taste buds of the newly married couple. Two weeks later Soma had paid another visit and inquired about the crab curry. He was told  that Punya and her mother did not have the heart to cook the crabs which were alive. They had kept on feeding the crabs till they died a natural death and were disposed of. Soma had a hearty laugh when he related this incident to me  decades later.

'Ben brotherhood' of Medical College days

Extract of old emails, sent to me by Buddy and Sadiq.

Dear Phillip,
I was delighted to see a photograph of my dear friend Sankaranarayana with
whom I had lost contact since 1965. He was the 4th member of our "Ben
Brotherhood" at Med. College. The brotherhood was made up of Sadiq (Ben
Bella), myself (Ben Khedda), Lawrence Ratnam (Ben Hur) and Sankaranarayana
(Ben Him). Our official car was the Mercedes BEN (though we were far from
actually owning one and travelled by bus or bike).
Could you please give me his Email address and/or home address. I must
re-establish contact with him. I would be very grateful if you also locate
Sadiq for me.
A happy new year to you,
Buddy

Thanks Philip for your reply. I was delighted to hear about Sankar. He looks so well, bless him. He was our Ben Him in our gang of Ben Brotherhood as Buddy mentioned. I was Ben Bella named after the then Algerian Prime Minister. It was Buddy and I who invented it. We used to have fun and the girls in our batch were amused. Bet you did not know all this. However I am quite surprised that Shankar is still working and as a MOH at that, in a place like Murungan, which I would believe is not a safe zone., unless I am mistaken. Could he not work a bit closer to Gampaha?

Incidentally my name is spelt Sadiq. The concept of Sadeeque was introduced by Prof Milroy Paul. Who used to read out my name as such when he called out our names in the attendance register at his afternoon lectures, much to the amusement of some of my close friends.

Regards

Sadiq

The Cherry Blossom Tree, Perrin and Geri

Oldies recall - One every day
How many of our batch-mates can recall, Perrin with a perpetual smile riding his Lambretta scooter, with Geri riding pillion and throwing a broad smile, at all the passing girls. They hit the highlights before they entered the Medical Faculty, with the the song 'The Cherry Blossom tree'. Just listen to it and appreciate the beautiful harmony of their voices.
