Daya Rodrigo, Appreciation.

Ayesha Ratnayake,

Dear all,

This is just to share with you some thoughts of my cherished uncle Daya, Nandhi's beloved husband, who passed away on 22.2.22, after a very short illness. While we miss him deeply and will always grieve his loss, we rejoice in the fact that he led a truly charmed and fruitful life and left this world with minimal suffering.

Daya mami spent the last few months of his life in his favourite places - the jungles of Yala and Wilpattu - and in the company of his favourite people - his wife, children, grandchildren and extended family. Mere days before his passing, he was delighting in the sight of thousands of flamingos in Mannar, and enjoying a boat ride on the river in Wilpattu.

As a skilled, conscientious and dedicated surgeon, he spent his life restoring health and hope to others. Many of his patients remember him with great affection to this day. He was widely respected by his colleagues, while consultants of today - once his medical students - carry on his legacy with pride and gratitude.

To his family and friends, he was known for his infectious passion for the jungle and nature, his knowledgeable chats on various topics, and his generous, sincere and jovial personality. He was someone who loved to be surrounded by those he loved (of all ages!), and had a story and anecdote for every occasion.

The love he shared with my aunt was palpable - a warm and close relationship of 55 years that inspired and blessed us all. We are grateful that his spirit lives on in his beloved children -  Nirmala and Asanka, and his adoring granddaughters Sanya and Aiyana, in whose lives he was totally involved.

We have been truly blessed to have known him, and he will always light up our memories with his sincerity and "contentment" (his favourite wish for everyone), funny stories and jokes, his hearty chuckle, and his adventurous spirit.

Sincere regards,
Ayesha

Hello Batchmates,
Sujiva just gave me the shocking news that Daya Rodrigo had passed away suddenly last night.
I understand he had had a bypass some years ago and was apparently fit.

Buddy
I rang up Daya's telephone number in Colombo. A person who identified himself as Daya's Nephew confirmed the news. He told me that Daya was admitted to Asiri Hospital earlier, was admitted to the Intensive care unit there, and got a cardiac arrest there.

Hi Philip

Daya Rodrigo, Nalini’s husband died yesterday after being ill for a week. They were about to come to Melbourne in a few days time!
Very sad.

Tribute posted by Dr. Nihal Gooneratne

G.S.Gnanasingham entered Medical Faculty from St Joseph’s College, Colombo. He lived in the Bambalapitiya Flats and rode a Lambretta scooter to Medical Faculty. I came to know him well; I was very close to him throughout our medical career, clinical appointments and class assignments, especially as he was in the ‘G’ group. I found him to be a low-key, soft-spoken, simple, very sincere person, a pinnacle of patience, never arrogant or confrontational. He was one of my very good friends, and I was fortunate to be able to associate with him very closely. His main hobby was fishing, which he enjoyed very much.  After graduation, I lost contact but, after many years found him working as a consultant in Psychiatry in Ratnapura Hospital.  As I was abroad, a few more years passed before I personally met him. By then, he had retired from his consultant post at Mullariyawa Mental Hospital. When I personally met him, he had a psychiatric private practice in Punchi-Borella. He was delighted to see me and we reestablished our friendship.  Thereafter, I continued to meet him on my visits to Sri Lanka.

Gnana was happily married to Kanthi, a wonderful lady. They have a son and a daughter. His son is a British qualified aeronautical engineer, working in the United States. He is married and has a son and daughter. Gnana’s daughter is a physician practicing in Colombo. She is married and has two daughters. The Gnanasinghams spent their last few years with the daughter’s family in Hokandara.

The rough time Gnana had in the Health Department hurt him; he was isolated and withdrawn during the latter part of his life. Gnana had a CVA complicated with pneumonia leading to renal failure secondary to diabetes. He had a peaceful death on Feb 5th. I will miss him very much. May he rest in peace.

 Nihal Gooneratne.
