Trust you and your family are safe and well. We are all saddened to see the stupidity, selfishness and extremism with intolerance, incompetence etc have reached the Zenith.. Our thoughts went back to the day we visited you and went to Ratnapura. I recall you noting the new found wealth.

This was a tragedy which we will overcome. The tears will dry up and we will learn to love again and overcome hatred. At the moment the water is muddied and we cannot see the beauty in the depths of the beautiful pool. But we will wait for silence and serenity to creep back into our lives. It is with profound sadness that we inform the demise of Dr LS Attygalle, GU Surgeon and husband of Dr Deepthi Attygalle, Consultant Anesthetist, and Past President of The College of Surgeons of Sri Lanka.

The funeral will be held at 10am on Tuesday, 21st May 2019, at General Cemetery, Borella.

Dr. Lakshman Attygalle was the son of Sir Nicholas Attygalle, our Vice-chancellor during our medical student days. He was a Demonstrator in Physiology during our 2nd MB days when he got engaged to our batch senior Ms.Deepthi Mendis, present well respected retired Consultant Anaesthetist and daughter of Prof of History G C Mendis. Dr. Lakshman Attygalle after completing his Primary FRCS in Colombo, worked as Senior House Officer to Dr. Misso. He specialised in Genito-Urinary Surgery and was posted as the first GU Surgeon at Kandy. Subsequently he was appointed GU Surgeon, GH Colombo from where he retired.
We express our condolences to Deepthi and his family.

Re­nam­ing roads: Why for­get Reid, Lionel Wendt and the YMCA?

Many let­ters in the news­pa­pers have fo­cused on the re-nam­ing of roads. This was prompted when Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha was re­named Nelum Pokuna Mawatha.

In my view, there is no jus­ti­fi­ca­tion for re-nam­ing some of the roads in the city.

Did we have to change Reid Av­enue to Philip Gu­nawar­dene Mawatha? True, the late Mr. Gu­nawar­dene was one of the able lieu­tenants of the late S.W.R.D. Ban­daranaike, and sup­ported his so­cial and po­lit­i­cal rev­o­lu­tion of 1956. He also made sac­ri­fices to help us gain In­de­pen­dence. His mem­ory should be hon­oured. No one will dis­pute this.

But why re­move the name of Ma­jor H. L. Reid, who was Prin­ci­pal of Royal Col­lege, when the school moved to its present site in Colombo 7 on Oc­to­ber 10, 1923?

Ma­jor Reid was also in­stru­men­tal in ini­ti­at­ing the first Royal-Trin­ity Rugby Match, and he com­posed the school song for Royal Col­lege. How can such a man be for­got­ten? It is sur­pris­ing that nei­ther the Royal Col­lege Old Boys’ Union nor the school prin­ci­pal (who may be ex­cused as he is not an old boy of Royal) made any plea to let the name Reid Av­enue re­main.

Buddy Reid 10 May 2019, 17:30 (3 days ago) to me Dear Philip, Thank you. You are the fount of all knowledge!  I was under the impression that HL's surname was spelt REED. That's what I saw in another  article and I was confused. It is logical that Reid avenue should to be named after the Principal of Royal. Another thing I was told is that REEDS are English and REIDS were Scottish.  I thought the Royal Principal was English. My ancestors were from Edinburgh (Reid) and arrived here in  around 1788 and settled initially in Matale. About 60 years ago a lady called  Matale Reid came to Sri Lanka to trace back her  ancestor of Sri Lanka. Apparantly a Reid must have gone back to Scotland but named his daughter  after his old home town. I did not know until the day after she left SL. My family tree indicates that H.L.Reid is no relation. With intermarriage, my genes are from  Scotland, Ireland, Portugal, Holland, Hungary,  Japan/China (uncertain) and Sri Lanka. I agree with the author that these street names should never be changed  because they  tell us history and heritage. New names should be for new roads. Thanks again Philip. Yours, Buddy

I was reminded of Prof.Sinnathmby, prompted by the passing away of one of his nieces, Dr. Jeathambihai Gnanapragasam, whose  obituary, I heard on Radios and also was published in Tamil Murasu Australia. I looked for any reference to Prof.Sinnathamby and found this Appreciatiion apparently  by his children! 

The services Prof.Sinnathamby has rendered to the Community as a very able Specialist, Professor and a Tamil activist has been apparently forgotten by the Community especially the Tamil community. He has not only published Books in Tamil for Medical education, helped establish Tamil Saiva Schools in the North western Province in areas like Udappu, Maruthankulam, Munneswaram. This was a very significant move by him, as the whole of that Province was slowly becoming a Catholic Sinhala speaking. Negombo, Chilaw and several villages and towns in that area,  like Anavilunthan, with Tamil names, (ஆனைவிழுந்தான்), have all become Sinhala speaking Catholic areas now, as there were no Tamil Schools there to teach Tamil. 

It is necessary that such pioneers who served Tamil and Saivaism be remembered with gratitude by our commnunity!

Another Professor who became a Tamil activist was Prof A.W.Mailvaganam, Professor of Physics at the University of Ceylon, Colombo. He mastered the Tamil language and was prepared to teach in Tamil. I happened to attend some of his classes in Radiation Physics, as part of our curriculum of the London Society of Radiographers, Diploma Exam. Subsequently, I met him at the Bambalapitiya Temple and attempted to talk to him, in English. He curtly replied 

in pure Tamil. I continued in Tamil with some English words in between,. Again he replied in Tamil only. I felt very embarrassed and then resorted to Tamil only after that. 

Prof. Mailvaganam was also involved in the Tamil University Movement in the Sixties and gave lectures to students at the Navalar Hall in Wellawatte.
