Old emails, Imelda, Sujeeva,

Hi Philip,

Dr Raja Bandaranayake was involved in medical education at the University of
New South Wales

when i came to Australia in the late 80's.When he met me he offered me a job
in medical education

and i did a research project for him on the OSCE--objective structured
clinical examination

which is now the 3rd year exam and now being used in many exams and
disciplines.

Raja then went on to the middle east wnere he was a professor until his
return a year or two ago.

Thought you may like to know this.

Would it be ok if I show the memoirs re Prof Paul to his son who is a good
friend if ours>?

Please do let me know.

Regards

Imelda

Dear Phillip,
That was delightful and instructive. However I am glad I left off running a lab and now just work as a pathologist, and am only an interested looker on in the conflicts and intrigues going on around me. There was a  Chinese philosoher in the 11th century who said " Be ye as water" because water, occupies the lowest level but gets to  the ocean by sliding round rocks or evaporating and recondensing. Was useful advice.

Grand-children - old emails

Hello Thava,

Welcome to the club of Grand-fathers. My daughter Queenie, completed her MD Anaesthesis  & Intensive care in SL. She had to do a one year overseas to become fully registered as a specialist. She got 2 years study leave and is working in Romford. She has already finished one year and is doing well in UK. Her husband and son joined her 3 months later. Wife & myself went and spent a 4 month holiday with our grand son. It was getting cold hence we got back to SL. I met quite a few of our crowd and quite a few of my students from Kandy and Colombo in the UK. It was a round of dinner parties and trips.

Wish your better half and children all the best. Enjoy life with your grand-child.

Philip

"Peenas amaruwa".
It was during my internship days at the General Hospital Colombo that I heard about the following incident. Some of the interns were very annoyed with admitting officers at the Out Patient's Department for taking the easy way out and admitting patients to the wards or referring them to the respective clinics without taking a history or examining patients. This resulted occasionally in hilarious incidents.
A patient had come to the out patient's department in the early hours of the morning. The medical officer, daughter of an academic, who was on duty, had asked him what was wrong. The patient had replied "Peenas amaaruwa". Before you could say 'Jack Robbins', the MO had referred the patient to the VD (Venereal Diseases) Clinic, in room X at the OPD, to report at 8 am the same day.
The patient totally unaware of the implications had duly reported to the clinic at the appointed hour. Only there had it been discovered that the MO/OPD had misinterpreted "PEENAS" for "PENIS", and hence the referral.
We the much harried interns never forgot to relate this story at our regular monthly parties in our quarters. .

"Stool falling on foot".
This incident also occurred while I was at the GH Colombo, in 1965. While we were on duty at the emergency ward we had to order quite a few Xrays. There were specially printed x-ray forms where we had to write a short history as to why we requested the Xray in addition to the area requested for Xray and the views needed.
A patient had come with an injury to the foot. A fracture was suspected in the foot. A request form was completed. The history of the accident was written as "stool fell on the foot", and the patient was dispatched to the X-ray room. Not long afterwards an MO from the X-ray rang up to talk to the house officer. On the house officer reaching the phone he was asked how a stool could fall on the foot in a normal person and how a stool even if the patient was constipated could be heavy enough to cause a fracture of a metacarpal bone. The intern house officer had to explain that he was referring to a piece of furniture and not to the output from the bowel.

Dushyanth Weeraman runs a dance school in Colombo. The “Baila” song is in Sinhalese and sung to a rhythm based on Portuguese and African influences. The Portuguese brought over mercenaries from Mozambique to fight their wars of conquest in Asia and far east in the years 1500 - 1660 hundred era.

I the Late 40s & early 50s my family lived in B'caloa . The corner of Hotel Rd & the Rd coming from St Micheal's College & the Town. Our Immediate neighbors were few old ladies (? men too) wore Frocks who spoke Portuguese. Living in an old House - one story with a Veranda.
They minded their own Business.
Were Baptist & Baldwin & Halpe, too of Portuguese Descent ?

In my checkered career I had taught in the Maldives too ‘68/‘69; one Mr. Outschoorn was a colleague and a good friend of mine: a relative of his Ladislaus ( Laddie) Outschoorn played  cricket for Worcestershire. He said most of them in Batticaloa were by faith Roman. Catholics . They used to sing carols in English and Portuguese . He preferred soccer than cricket & the football master in the Maldives. I was wondering whether@ our teacher Mr. S.W.A. Constantine and D’Abrera were Portuguese burghers .

In the eastern province of Sri Lanka, the Portuguese Burghers used to sing the Kaffringha in Creole . I accessed google and listened to one of those melodies. Thank you .

Mr. Baldsinh is of Portuguese descent: his son Leander D. Baldsinh told me so; Halpe appears to be a Portuguese name. Baptist I am not sure whether he’s a Dutch Burgher . Ceylon had been under Portuguese, Dutch and British rulers .However the DBU
was/is an exclusive club . If a Dutch Burgher boy or girl got married to a non Dutch (except of course an Englishman ) that youth was not permitted into the DBU premises! Vancuylenberg - Vancy our classmate , a mechanical foreman at Walker Sons Ltd.- had been rather caustic about the DBU. He told me it would have been better if it had stood for Doubtful Burghers Union!
