Thanks

Omari Latha Me Dance

Dushyanth Weeraman runs a dance school in Colombo. The “Baila” song is in Sinhalese and sung to a rhythm based on Portuguese and African influences. The Portuguese brought over mercenaries from Mozambique to fight their wars of conquest in Asia and far east in the years 1500 - 1660 hundred era.

I the Late 40s & early 50s my family lived in B'caloa . The corner of Hotel Rd & the Rd coming from St Micheal's College & the Town. Our Immediate neighbors were few old ladies (? men too) wore Frocks who spoke Portuguese. Living in an old House - one story with a Veranda.
They minded their own Business.
Were Baptist & Baldwin & Halpe, too of Portuguese Descent ?

In my checkered career I had taught in the Maldives too ‘68/‘69; one Mr. Outschoorn was a colleague and a good friend of mine: a relative of his Ladislaus ( Laddie) Outschoorn played  cricket for Worcestershire. He said most of them in Batticaloa were by faith Roman. Catholics . They used to sing carols in English and Portuguese . He preferred soccer than cricket & the football master in the Maldives. I was wondering whether@ our teacher Mr. S.W.A. Constantine and D’Abrera were Portuguese burghers .

In the eastern province of Sri Lanka, the Portuguese Burghers used to sing the Kaffringha in Creole . I accessed google and listened to one of those melodies. Thank you .

Mr. Baldsinh is of Portuguese descent: his son Leander D. Baldsinh told me so; Halpe appears to be a Portuguese name. Baptist I am not sure whether he’s a Dutch Burgher . Ceylon had been under Portuguese, Dutch and British rulers .However the DBU
was/is an exclusive club . If a Dutch Burgher boy or girl got married to a non Dutch (except of course an Englishman ) that youth was not permitted into the DBU premises! Vancuylenberg - Vancy our classmate , a mechanical foreman at Walker Sons Ltd.- had been rather caustic about the DBU. He told me it would have been better if it had stood for Doubtful Burghers Union!
