Remembering Anula

It was in the early part of the second MB. We were a long way from picking acquaintances in our batch.

The Christians of the Student Christian Movement went for our Sunday church services to the Ladies College Chapel. After the Church services we would meet for short eats and a cup of tea. Douglas Arulanandam, jovial as ever, pointed out Anula  Aluvihare and told  me that the European Ladies College Principal, who was  also present at the tea, was fond of Anula and pronounced the name as Anula as ‘An-You-La’.

Vijitha Nikapota had a Lambretta scooter. One day we spotted Anula riding side saddle on Vijitha’s scooter. This was one of the earlier hitch-ups in our batch. Both of them, and Prof Basnayake were active members in the Ceylon Symphony Ochestra.

When I was DMO at Koslanda, I would conduct a Maternity Clinic at Nikapota. I heard this was the ancestral home of Vijitha. I met quite a few of his relatives there.

I was Co-Senior House Officer with Vijitha at the Orthopaedic Unit Kandy. The Nikapotas invited me and my wife for a dinner, to their residence at Deweni Rajasinghe Road Kandy. It was a dinner enjoyed in the company of a Mr.Jacob, a civil engineer, one of Vijitha’s friends.

We parted ways and Vijita branched off to Radiology and Anula to Mental Health, and later settled down in the UK. Vijitha came to the Peradeniya Teaching  Hospital and updated the MOs  there, on their knowledge of Radiology, when ultra-sound scans were new. Anula also made frequent trips to Sri Lanka to help in the field of Mental Health.

A few years back on one of their trips to Sri Lanka, at their request, I went with them to the Alupola waterfalls. Vijitha and his cousin, who accompanied him, had a lovely time bathing in the river. Anula and one of her female aquaintences enjoyed sips from a bottle of wine from Bordeax, which I had brought along. I remember Anula remarking ‘Bordeaux wine near a lovely waterfall. What more do you want in life’.

Years rolled on and we met at our batch get-togethers. The love shown to each other and their enjoyment  of music bound them together. Their commitment to help others was one of their outstanding characters.

As we sing in that beautiful Chrystian hymn-

In the sweet –In the sweet,

Bye and bye – By and bye,

We will meet on that beautiful shore

In the sweet –In the sweet,

Bye and bye – By and bye,

We will meet on that beautiful shore’

Our condolences go out to Vijitha and his family.

to Hiranthi-Travis, me
Thank you very much Philip for this appreciation.
I was to write to you but because I was so involved, with all the complications resulting from the tragedy, I told Travis to inform you until I was back in England.
This morning Damita and I start our final lap of the drive to Stockholm.
Anula and I have experienced innumerable long drives in many different countries. Sweden was one of her favourites especially in summer.
From Stockholm, I fly to London and Damita to Colombo. Anula will probably make the flight to U.K. on 12/4, although attempts were made for her to be on the same flight as me on 11/4.

One small correction Dr  Basnayake was not an orchestral player but was an excellent pianist.
He often accompanied Anula’s violin playing.
The orchestral conductor was Earle de Fonseka with whom we also played string quartets with Travis included.
Please keep in touch.
Yours sincerely,
Vijita.

to me

Dear Phillip,

It was indeed very shocking to hear about Anula. The good thing is at least she did not have to suffer which is I believe what we all hope for. not sure whether the two of them attended our last get-together but they were active participants at our previous ones

If you do you have Vijitha's e mail please pass it on.

Regards

Assa

to nvijita, me
Dear Vijitha

I was very saddened to hear the sudden & most unexpected death of your beloved wife and a wonderful batch mate of ours.
Both of you were a wonderful couple who always supported actively all our batch reunions.

Whenever I asked for any help towards some of the charitable activities we had undertaken over the years, both of you responded positively and generously.

You may well remember your generous contribution towards our efforts ( Nana’s mostly UK Batch )to raise funds towards purchase of much needed valuable books to the medical faculty library books and in addition, towards the regular monthly financial assistance we are providing monthly, for 2 medical students till they complete successfully the full 5 years and recurring every five years for another two worthy students.

You would miss her so badly but she would also be missed by the batch mates, all her close friends and above all those helpless patients and families who received your valuable expert mental health advice.

May she rest in Peace.

Please accept our deepest sympathies  and every good wish.
I am in Sri Lanka at present and unlikely that I would be able visit you to of our deepest sympathies.

We can can only share our very sincere thoughts at this time of your great loss and severe grief.
Nana
