The phrase 'no man is an island' expresses the idea that human beings do badly when isolated from others and need to be part of a community in order to thrive.
John Donne, who wrote the work that the phrase comes from, was a Christian but this concept is shared by other religions, principally Buddhism.
What's the origin of the phrase 'No man is an island'?
'No man is an island' is a quotation from the English metaphysical poet John Donne (1572-1631).
I
No man is an island entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less,
As well as if a promontory were,
As well as any manor of thy friend's,
Or of thine own were.
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know
for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

to Lakshman
Karals,
I read a book in the 1980s titled 'Psychic discoveries behind the Iron Curtain' by Sheila Ostrander & c. She described an experiment carried out in a lab in Moscow of the Soviet Era. A rabbit which had a litter was selected. The litter was separated from the  mother  rabbit and was taken on  board a Soviet submarine, going on patrol to the Arctic. The captain of the submarine was told to  kill one member of the litter at  a time and the date and time of the killing noted  on a diary. The mother rabbit was monitored in the lab in Moscow, with EEG recordings and basic parameters observed and noted.
The scientists in the lab could see the  alteration in the EEG and basic parameters every time a member of the litter was killed, when they compared notes later.
This brings us to the proposition, that the entire life form of our planet earth, is a multi-nucleate syncetium, inter-connected.
The teachings of all religious leaders carried this message.
The mystics could see this very clearly, when they were full of Maithry and Karuna.
When you hurt another living being, you are hurting yourself.
.

'No man is an island entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main ...
'

This is a vision I try to develop and live by.

Philip
