As an Englishman residing in South India observed, nearly a hundred years ago, Tamil is the 'Language of Devotion'. The 'Cult of Bhakthi' where the individual attaches himself/herself, to his/her chosen image of God, is the prevalent concept on the path to 'Liberation' of ones Soul.
The way of - 'Bhakthi' -attachment can be of two ways.
One is the way of the kitten - where like a kitten being carried by its mother, by the scruff of the kittens neck - the kitten remains totally passive and awaits the will of of its mother - the devotee remains passive, awaiting lifes developements as Gods will.
The second way is that of the infant monkey. The infant monkey clings to its mothers body and will not let go in spite of all the acrobatics performed by the mother. This is an active form where the devotee clings to and does not let go of God.
The words of this song denote the second way.
It describe a young damsel, yearning for Lord Krishna and the music of his flute.
The composition of the music is in a form known as 'Raga Maalika' - a mansion of raagas, hence its universal appeal. Each time you listen to it you want to hear it again. If you understand the words of the song, sung in Tamil, you would also understand, the near erotic union requested with Krishna, the lover, in the song.
I hope that I have given you a glimpse of the beauty of this song.
