Apparently he had liver secondaries and came to Sri Lanka to pass his last few days in his motherland.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the demise of LGH Karunapala. He was at
the Jeewaka Medical Hostel in the 1960's when it was in Turrett
Road. He was a lively energetic soul never at a loss for words. I got to
know him better when he lived in the UK. He often came to me for advice
on imaging of various kinds. Karunapala was very careful with his
health and investigated problems fully. I lost contact with him more
than a decade ago. I will remember his wit and humour and his amusing
stories about people.
May he find the ultimate Bliss of Nirvana. on Karunapala LGH
