PCR testing for COVID-19 (UPDATED)
Facilities for testing have been established at the virology laboratories at MRI, National Hospital Kandy, TH Karapitiya and TH Anuradhapura.
Update: samples can also be sent to the Centre for Dengue Research, Faculty of Medicine, USJP.
The designated laboratory for the 17 identified hospitals with isolation facilities are given in the circular below.
At least two major private hospitals have sent SMS alerts to the registered patients offering COVID-19 PCR tests. Cost is approx Rs. 17,000/- to 18,000/-. This information is also circulating on social media.
As clearly stated in the circular there is NO PLACE for this as a screening test in the private sector.
Indication is ONLY for patients meeting the current case definition of COVID-19, who are admitted to one of the 17 designated hospitals.

The CDC 2019-nCoV Real-Time RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel is a molecular in vitro diagnostic test that aids in the detection and diagnosis 2019-nCoV and is based on widely used nucleic acid amplification technology. The product contains oligonucleotide primers and dual-labeled hydrolysis probes (TaqMan®) and control material used in rRT-PCR for the in vitro qualitative detection of 2019-nCoV RNA in respiratory specimens. The term “qualified laboratories” refers to laboratories in which all users, analysts, and any person reporting results from use of this device should be trained to perform and interpret the results from this procedure by a competent instructor prior to use.
