Don't
try to do too much. The first time I went we booked lovely hotels but
hardly saw them as we were up early and returned late every day on
trips.
Don't be
afraid of the food. Avoid hotel buffets and eat out. Usually if you
don't specify you are offered “tourist hot” rather than “Sri Lankan
hot”. Food is fresh and cheap and tastes wonderful.
Do
hire a tuk tuk (and driver) and explore. Always ask the price for a
trip beforehand and make sure you have the right cash, or a small amount
over. Otherwise you may find the driver “has no change” - only happened
to us once.
Don't buy much on a spice trip- you can pick up the same much cheaper at a local market (Spice Shack in Galle is great).
Carry a sarong with you. Handy for covering legs/arms if you want to go to a temple.
Overall have fun. It's a great country with lovely people and fantastic scenery. And amazing food.
