Dear Tissa:
It was nice to hear from you after many years, to be
precise since leaving medical school. I saw you at Habarana briefly but
never got a chance to touch base. It was a short reunion, nevertheless a
great one. I met Wedisinghe recently and suggested it is time to
organize another reunion, preferably in late Dec/early Jan. in
2009/2010. Most of the expatriates are on holiday in LKA in Dec/Jan.
I am still practicing full-time in Radiology ( to quote you
from the epilogue- "and a few continue to dabble in the profession simply because we know nothing else to keep ourselves occupied") with special interest in nuclear medicine. I am more into high tech
imaging (US, CT, NM & MRI). After my fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago, I was in academic medicine for a short time and have a few publications and paper presentations to my credit. I switched to private practice in 1980. I still hold an academic appointment at University of
Illinois. I am also an examiner in the American Board of Radiology.
After my 2nd son's death I took to high altitude trekking and climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt. Fuji, Southern ice cap (Payne Circuit), Mt Everest 1st Base camp and Mt Elbrus-the highest peak in Europe and few other strenuous hikes in Mongolia, Tibet and Europe. My only regret is, I could not make a summit
attempt on Mt Everest and Acancagua. I discovered trekking when I was in the 60's and hence to old for these difficult treks. My bad back has forced me to give up my much cherished trekking.
Sarojini was a pathologist mainly working in the academic field and she retired 2 years ago. My son is at U Penn as an
Asst. Prof. and into research on sleep disorders. He has 3 sons and
the wife is Swiss. The daughter has a Masters from Harvard University, Kennedy School of Govt. and is a consultant in Washington DC. She is married to an American and has a daughter. I hope to quit work one of these days. We try to visit LKA often to spend time in our condo in Jayawardanapura. We spend most of our free time travelling.
In Jan '08 I accompanied my wife for her reunion in Colombo and when I heard of the achievement of Lalitha Mendis, I was wondering where have my batchmates been all these years. I am sure there are many like me, unaware of the individual accomplishments of our batchmates. Therefore I think we should compile the biography of the batchmates and include in the
2nd edition. A questionnaire to compile the data is a good start.
I am in touch with Subadra. I was sorry to hear about your
brother's illness. Hope he is doing well.
With kind regards
